Marrakech is one of those cities that instantly overloads your senses. The second you step into the Medina, you’re dodging scooters, walking through clouds of spices, and taking in a thousand different sounds. It’s vibrant and chaotic – which is exactly why where you stay matters so much.
Enter Riad Sakkan. Tucked away down a quiet side street in the Mouassine district, this place feels less like a traditional hotel and more like a hidden sanctuary designed by someone with impeccable taste. In fact, its exceptional design and service recently earned it a prestigious Michelin Key rating. We spent a few days here during our trip to Marrakech, and it completely changed how we experienced the city.
If you’re trying to figure out whether Riad Sakkan is worth the price tag, here is our honest, no-fluff review covering the rooms, the food, the location, and what you actually need to know before booking.
Quick Verdict
Overall Rating: 9.6 / 10
The Vibe: Effortlessly chic, tranquil, Michelin Key-recognized luxury
Best For: Couples, design enthusiasts, and anyone wanting a peaceful retreat inside the Medina
Location: Mouassine district – super central, extremely safe, and easy to navigate
Standout Feature: A heated courtyard pool and a rooftop that actually serves great cocktails (a rarity in the Medina)
Planning your dates?
Rooms here are extremely limited because it’s a boutique stay, and they fill up months in advance for peak season (October–April).
Location: Navigating Marrakech’s Medina
Location is everything in Marrakech. If you stay too far outside the center, you’ll spend your whole trip haggling for taxis. Stay too deep in the maze, and you’ll get lost every single time you leave your room.
Riad Sakkan hits the absolute sweet spot. It’s located in Mouassine, which is widely considered one of the safest and cleanest neighborhoods in the old town. You’re roughly a 10-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa (the main square) and minutes away from some of the best boutiques and rooftop cafés.
How to get there: Cars can’t drive down the narrow alleyways of the Medina. Your taxi or private transfer will drop you at the nearest accessible point. From there, it’s a quick 3-to-5-minute walk. We highly recommend messaging the riad in advance so they can send a porter to meet you and carry your bags – navigating cobblestones with heavy luggage is no fun.

The Vibe & Design: An Oasis of Quiet
The moment the heavy wooden front door shuts behind you, the noise of the Medina completely vanishes. It immediately becomes clear why this property caught the attention of the Michelin Guide – every single space is curated with intention.
Architecturally, Riad Sakkan strikes an incredible balance between authentic Moroccan craftsmanship and contemporary Scandinavian minimalism. Instead of overly ornate tiles and heavy fabrics, you get clean lines, natural textures, neutral tones, and stunning modern art curated throughout the property.
The central courtyard is centered around lush palm trees, quiet seating nooks, and a sleek plunge pool. It smells subtly of cedarwood and orange blossom, and there’s soft music playing in the background. It feels intimate, private, and deeply relaxing.
The Rooms: Comfort Meets Aesthetic
Riad Sakkan has a mix of rooms and suites, each individually styled. We stayed in one of their standard suites, and the attention to detail was top-tier.
Bed & Comfort: The bed was super spacious and comfortable, giving us a great night’s sleep after a long day of exploring the Medina.
Climate Control: Important note for Marrakech: the AC unit was quiet and powerful (essential for hot afternoons), and there’s proper heating for chilly desert nights in winter.
The Bathroom: Sprawling walk-in shower and locally made organic toiletries that smelled incredible.
Noise Level: Because the riad is tucked away from main thoroughfares, we didn’t hear a sound from the street at night.
Pro Tip: If you have trouble with stairs, request a ground-floor room near the courtyard. Otherwise, the upper-floor suites offer a bit more privacy and easier access to the rooftop.
Thinking of staying here?
Riad Sakkan has only a small collection of individually designed suites, meaning every room offers a slightly different layout and experience.
The Amenities: Heated Pool & Rooftop Views
The Courtyard Pool
One of the most common questions people ask before booking a riad is: “Is the pool actually warm?”
Most riad pools in Marrakech are essentially cold plunge tubs built for aesthetics. Riad Sakkan’s pool, however, is heated during the cooler months. Floating in warm water surrounded by banana trees after walking 15,000 steps through the souks is absolute heaven.
The Rooftop
The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably spend most of your late afternoons. It’s divided into a few areas: a sunbathing deck with loungers, open-air dining tables, and shaded lounge spots surrounded by cacti and olive trees. Watching the sunset over the Medina rooftops while listening to the distant call to prayer is pure magic.
Food & Drinks: Rooftop Dining & Cocktails
Breakfast
Breakfast is included with your stay and is served daily on the rooftop or in the courtyard. Forget greasy buffet spreads – this is a freshly prepared, multi-course meal. Expect fresh-squeezed orange juice, specialty coffee, homemade breads and pastries, local jams, yogurt with fruit, and cooked-to-order eggs.
The Rooftop Restaurant & Bar
Finding a place that serves alcohol inside the historic Medina can be surprisingly tricky due to local regulations. Riad Sakkan is one of the few boutique stays with a full liquor license.
Their rooftop restaurant serves incredible Mediterranean-Moroccan fusion dishes (the fresh salads and flatbreads were highlights for us). Pairing dinner with a cold craft cocktail or a glass of local wine right on the roof makes staying in for dinner a no-brainer.
Pros & Cons
No hotel is perfect for everyone. Here’s our honest breakdown to help you decide if it fits your travel style:
What We Loved (Pros):
Incredible atmosphere: Unmatched peace and quiet right in the middle of the bustling Medina, backed by Michelin Key distinction.
Heated pool: A massive advantage if you’re visiting between November and March.
Incredible rooftop terrace: Relaxing with a sunset view over the Medina without having to leave the hotel.
Top-tier service: The staff remembers your name, helps book dinners, and handles luggage effortlessly.
Design-forward: Every corner is an aesthetic dream without feeling sterile.
Things to Keep in Mind (Cons):
Price point: It sits on the higher end of the boutique market in Marrakech (though quality fully justifies the rate).
No direct car access: You’ll need to walk 3–5 minutes from the taxi drop-off point (standard for Medina riads).
High demand: Because it’s small, it sells out well in advance during spring and autumn.
